THE MISSING MONET & THE WOMAN WITH THE SNAKE TATTOO

Did a Monet go missing from an important art collection in Zimbabwe? I spoke to Louisa Treger about the novel she wrote after she investigated this rumour. Her novel The Dragon Lady (2019) is based on the life of the exotic Lady Virginia Courtauld who was pivotal in the story. “It began with a family visit […]

SINGITA CASTLETON

Castleton Camp is the former home of Singita's founding family. Castleton Lodge in the heart of the Sabi Sand Game Reserve was once the family home of Singita’s founder Luke Bailes’ grandfather. By opening the house to commercial use, Singita introduced a new theme on bush lodge holidays. Castleton feels like an old farmhouse - […]

NGALA TREEHOUSE

andBeyond'sNgala Treehouse is suspended twelve metres above ground on a custom-designed platform.  To describe this elegant space as a treehouse seems a misnomer. It’s far removed from the thing ten-year-old you conjured in the garden jacaranda out of some planks and a candlewick bedspread. And yet the name is perfect. A treehouse encapsulates a fragile […]

SAFARI MOON

Firstly, there’s the name. Safari Moon. Just two words bestow a world of evocative bushveld magic. Secondly, you respond at once to the visual impact.  It’s a commercial lodge that feels like the private home of your wonderful friend who is also lavishly wealthy, slightly eccentric and fabulously talented. Which pretty much sums up Safari […]

SUE MARTIN

Although she’d far rather be in her large studio that floats at tree height dappled in autumn leaf and music, Sue Martin welcomes me warmly at her front door. Martin is an established mixed-media contemporary artist whose work has headlined in group and solo exhibitions. One of her trademarks is her daring with materials and […]

CATHY PRETTEJOHN

Her photography career began when a girlhood hobby that had never quite released its hold drew her in a fresh, mid-life direction. Cathy Prettejohn’s photographic images leave a gentle wake. They seem painterly. Floating against sun-bleached canvas horizons they speak through what’s left unseen. Her distinctive photographic style followed a bold decision to resign from […]

MAKANYI PRIVATE GAME LODGE

The road to Makanyi raises a high, russet tail of dust in your wake as you navigate what’s known as ‘the middle road’ through the Timbavati Game Reserve. You pass families of elegant giraffe, trotting warthogs, and pirouetting bokkies, to arrive at last in the dappled shade of the 80 mighty marula trees that sprawl […]

This captivating building hides among low hills and grasslands on a six thousand hectare farm in South Africa. Coromandel Estate Manor House was designed by the famous Italian architect and industrial designer Marco Zanuso in 1975. It was commissioned by Sydney Press, founder of the former Edgar’s group, and one of the foremost businessmen of […]

Safari Girl

HELLO

I’m Bev Tucker, a lifestyle journalist living in Ireland and Africa. My ancestry is Anglo-Celtic transplanted to East and Southern Africa six generations ago, which prompted the name of this blog. Safari is a Swahili word that means 'to travel away from home'. I grew up in various far-flung corners of Africa where I had the privilege of being taken on long expeditions to game reserves and other interesting places in our beloved and trusty family Land Rover loaded with everything we'd need for the duration. These were my first safaris and sparked my love of nature and an enduring curiosity about the world.
