Although she’d far rather be in her large studio that floats at tree height dappled in autumn leaf and music, Sue Martin welcomes me warmly at her front door. Martin is an established mixed-media contemporary artist whose work has headlined in group and solo exhibitions. One of her trademarks is her daring with materials and […]

Her photography career began when a girlhood hobby that had never quite released its hold drew her in a fresh, mid-life direction. Cathy Prettejohn’s photographic images leave a gentle wake. They seem painterly. Floating against sun-bleached canvas horizons they speak through what’s left unseen. Her distinctive photographic style followed a bold decision to resign from […]

The road to Makanyi raises a high, russet tail of dust in your wake as you navigate what’s known as ‘the middle road’ through the Timbavati Game Reserve. You pass families of elegant giraffe, trotting warthogs, and pirouetting bokkies, to arrive at last in the dappled shade of the 80 mighty marula trees that sprawl […]

Led by their love of aviation, travel and conservation, Jay and Jan Roode bypassed conventional urban lives to live as nomadic photographers. Their lifestyle takes them on aerial expeditions over Africa’s dunes and deserts, across its great savannahs and thousands of miles along remote coastlines. Their photography has been widely published in an impressive list of […]

This captivating building hides among low hills and grasslands on a six thousand hectare farm in South Africa. Coromandel Estate Manor House was designed by the famous Italian architect and industrial designer Marco Zanuso in 1975. It was commissioned by Sydney Press, founder of the former Edgar’s group, and one of the foremost businessmen of […]

Far more serious than merely nights without cricket song - which thought alone chills the blood - the extinction of insect species threatens the continued existence of all life on earth. Chris van Niekerk's art raises the alarm.

Earth Lodge in South Africa's northeast was among the first deluxe hospitality venues to choose ancient natural building principles for its construction. It caused a real stir when this Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve lodge arrived on the lodge architecture scene. With its unvarnished, low-set exterior and environmental building approach that reflected its natural surroundings, […]

Lisa St Aubin de Terán’s life reads as fabulously as one of her award-winning books. She has lived all over the world in outlandish, often dangerous, circumstances. One of her novels has now been made into a film.  We’re speaking via a highly-strung WiFi connection, I from a misty Irish farm, she from a dot […]

She paints huge canvases alight with birds. They sweep you into their flickering clouds on tumultuous wings. “I want people to be able to hear them,” she says. The Zimbabwean artist works from her studio in Victoria Falls where she lives with her husband and their six-year-old daughter. She holds a BA Fine Art in painting […]

Craig Cameron-Mackintosh returned to painting in 2015 having not picked up a brush since graduating from high school a decade earlier. In 2019 his oil, Lesela in Silhouette, won the esteemed Sanlam Portrait Award. His first solo exhibition opened in Cape Town in December 2020. He spoke to me about his artistic process, his career, […]

Safari Girl

I’m Bev Tucker, a lifestyle journalist living in Ireland and Africa. My ancestry is Anglo-Celtic transplanted to East and Southern Africa six generations ago, which prompted the name of this blog. Safari is a Swahili word that means 'to travel away from home'. I grew up in various far-flung corners of Africa where I had the privilege of being taken on long expeditions to game reserves and other interesting places in our beloved and trusty family Land Rover loaded with everything we'd need for the duration. These were my first safaris and sparked my love of nature and an enduring curiosity about the world.
