PAUL KRISTAFOR

Paul Kristafor's turned wood vessels are as delicate as porcelain and seem to hum with an inner life that dictates their forms. I called on him in his Porterville studio to talk about his work. Paul Kristafor has been turning wood as an art form for close to four years. “The first two and a […]

SWANTRIBUNE

The wanderlust life of Divya Aurora Zeiss-Cohen, the name behind the design agency Swantribune, has paused - for now - in the shadow of the Italian Alps, but her work continues to evoke the romance of travel in bygone eras. With a name as beautifully evocative as hers, it’s fitting that Divya Aurora Zeiss-Cohen would […]

TENGILE RIVER LODGE

It goes without saying that a lodge with Tengile’s status should offer a bush experience with all the finest bells and whistles. And so it does. andBeyond’s Sabi Sands camp is uber-chic yet laid back. There are enormous 200m² suites with private sunken verandahs, glorious bathing facilities, private pools, river views, unbeatable proximity to wildlife, […]

JAVIER MEDINA

A Spanish master artisan weaver, Javier Medina has revived a traditional craft by giving it a contemporary flair. Esparto grass weaving is a traditional craft native to Spain's large inland Extramadura region, where he grew up. For centuries, esparto was plaited and woven to make everyday functional items and furnishing. With the rise of convenience […]

ZAMBEZI HOUSE

Just outside the town of Victoria Falls on the south bank of the Zambezi River which forms the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, you find an eclectic eatery and social space that stirs the imagination. It's a feast of Gypsetter style with a nod to the great explorers of way back when. This multi-level eating […]

THE MISSING MONET & THE WOMAN WITH THE SNAKE TATTOO

Did a Monet go missing from an important art collection in Zimbabwe? I spoke to Louisa Treger about the novel she wrote after she investigated this rumour. Her novel The Dragon Lady (2019) is based on the life of the exotic Lady Virginia Courtauld who was pivotal in the story. “It began with a family visit […]

SINGITA CASTLETON

Castleton Camp is the former home of Singita's founding family. Castleton Lodge in the heart of the Sabi Sand Game Reserve was once the family home of Singita’s founder Luke Bailes’ grandfather. By opening the house to commercial use, Singita introduced a new theme on bush lodge holidays. Castleton feels like an old farmhouse - […]

NGALA TREEHOUSE

andBeyond'sNgala Treehouse is suspended twelve metres above ground on a custom-designed platform.  To describe this elegant space as a treehouse seems a misnomer. It’s far removed from the thing ten-year-old you conjured in the garden jacaranda out of some planks and a candlewick bedspread. And yet the name is perfect. A treehouse encapsulates a fragile […]

SAFARI MOON

Firstly, there’s the name. Safari Moon. Just two words bestow a world of evocative bushveld magic. Secondly, you respond at once to the visual impact.  It’s a commercial lodge that feels like the private home of your wonderful friend who is also lavishly wealthy, slightly eccentric and fabulously talented. Which pretty much sums up Safari […]

Safari Girl

HELLO

I’m Bev Tucker, a lifestyle journalist living in Ireland and Africa. My ancestry is Anglo-Celtic transplanted to East and Southern Africa six generations ago, which prompted the name of this blog. Safari is a Swahili word that means 'to travel away from home'. I grew up in various far-flung corners of Africa where I had the privilege of being taken on long expeditions to game reserves and other interesting places in our beloved and trusty family Land Rover loaded with everything we'd need for the duration. These were my first safaris and sparked my love of nature and an enduring curiosity about the world.
